I tell them that the differences between the perspectives must be equal in all areas of the essay except one. That area is to the point.For example, if the students write a write-up about a family with five kids living in a rented house, the main viewpoint should be 'five kids living in a rented house.' The fourth viewpoint should be 'the family's dining area.' The fifth viewpoint should be about the mother playing her piano or the family member doing his hobby while the kids played or the third viewpoint should be the guests chatting with the children in the dining area.The students must take note of the differences between the two essays and then they must ensure that the essay topics with different viewpoints are balanced. The last viewpoint in the essay can be 'friends' in the form of 'the friends in the rented house.' So, a balance is achieved and there is not much confusion about the topics. However, it is still necessary to be aware of the essay topics with different viewpoints.Because the differences between the essays are equal, it means that the essays are ei ther humorous or serious or something in between. Some students want to express themselves humorously while others want to express themselves in a more serious way. The answer is no.The topics with different perspectives are not supposed to be funny at all. There is no need to do so unless the essay topic with different perspectives is extremely serious. This is the only way to learn to balance the different perspectives.Students must remember that these essays are supposed to be an exercise in communication. If the goal is for the students to express themselves humorously, it will not be successful. They will just end up looking foolish and having an unfair advantage over the other students who wrote essays that were not balanced. The better method is to write about the topic in a way that is balanced.
